FrequentlyAskedQuestions

Just a few questions that commonly come up:

Design and Illustration services:
  • What?  Hundreds of dollars for a logo?  I was thinking more like 50 bucks.
    • Maybe it's a big elephant in a small room, but it is a valid sentiment that comes up sometimes, so I thought I'd mention it.  I know there are logo mills that will make you a 'custom logo' for the aforementioned 50 bucks - or you could toss it out to Fiverr and see what you get for even less.  That's totally cool; if that is your budget, there are avenues for it.   What I do is try to get into the specifics of the client's wants and needs and make something that is fresh - not just following the logo style du jour or creating an icon with 'Insert Text Here' just waiting for your business name.  I sometimes even alter typefaces or create whole new letterforms to make wordmarks unique.  My clients seem to find my time and effort worth the cost.
    • You know, the Rolling Stones only paid 50 UK pounds for their iconic logo... in 1970.  That's over £750 today ($999 in US dollars).
  • Why do I have to sign a contract?
    • Contracts just make sure that both parties do what they are expected to do.  Without a contract, a client could receive work and not pay for it, or a designer could accept a client deposit and just not do any work.  The contract just provides legal recourse for both sides, protecting everyone involved.  I'm not slipping in clauses that say you owe me a new car or your first born or anything, I promise.
  • Can you design me a [whatever]?
    • Well, get in touch and let me know what you need and we'll find out together!  I will certainly give any project a look, but I have no problem suggesting a potential client look elsewhere if I don't feel I am able to satisfy the need.

3D-Printed products:
  • How long will it take to print my order?
    • Obviously the size and quantity play a part in this, but generally, Bullseye Buttons take approximately 45 minutes each, while something like the StompBox takes around 6 hours and the giant D20s take about 12 hours each.
  • Can you match this specific color?
    • Really I am limited to the colors of plastic filaments available on the market.  If I can't match a specific color, I can certainly look for something close or complementary.
  • My Bullseye Buttons are too tight/too loose - what happened?
    • Sometimes a given filament type doesn't extrude the same way as others, or sometimes there is a subtle shift in the nozzle distance from the print surface, that makes the final inner diameter of the Button slightly out of spec.  If your Button is too tight, remember they are meant to be snug so they don't fly off - you should have to use at least a little bit of force to seat it on the footswitch.  If it's too loose by just a little bit (slips on and off easily but stays in place on its own) you can add a little bit of silicone or rubber cement inside to keep it from moving.  If your Button is just plain the wrong size, let me know what kind of pedal you have and what size you ordered - it might just be the wrong size!  Either way, if you're dissatisfied just let me know and I'll try to make it right.
  • Are the plastics used in 3D printing safe to handle?
    • The vast majority of my printing is in PLA plastic, which is advertised as nontoxic and biodegradable, though I wouldn't eat it or want to use it in a food application - 3D printing is rarely [if ever] food-safe, in part due to the tiny crevices and gaps inherent to the printing process.  A small portion of my printing is in PVB filament; while I do not know the full specifics on its safety level, it is a common plastic used in things like safety glass and is alcohol-soluble; it doesn't produce any fumes while printing.   I do not print in ABS, as the fumes are just too noxious and the chance of warping is too high for my liking.
  • Why is the shipping so high for these tiny buttons?
    • I added this question here because I feel the same way; the smallest non-flat item that one can ship with the US Postal Service, with tracking, is almost $4, even without the packaging cost.  I'm not charging customers more than I am paying for the shipping; in most cases I am eating a part of the shipping cost myself.

T-shirts and other graphic-print items:
  • How long will it take to send out my order?
    • Currently I use Printful for printing and fulfillment (it's not just a clever name!) - they seem to take about a week to make shirts and then ship out via DHL.  Sometimes it's faster, but I would say expect about 10 days to receive your shirt just to be safe.
  • Can I get that shirt in ladies/children's/sweatshirt/other variation?
    • Absolutely!  If you want one of my designs on a different style of shirt, just ask and I can set up a new product.  Printful has a nice selection of styles.
  • Hey, what happened to that one design?  I wanted to buy one of those!
    • Sometimes I do have to remove designs, either temporarily while I'm revising the design, or permanently upon request.  Why would that second thing happen?  Well, you can see some of my designs are intended as parody upon existing intellectual property, but if the IP holder specifically requests that I stop offering the design then I will generally do so.  On the one hand, I just want to make people smile and I'm not trying to get into a war, and on the other hand, they generally have a way larger legal budget than I do even if I did want to fight.  C'est les affaires!
  • Do you make stickers/magnets?
    • My printing provider does not currently offer them, but I am looking into other sources!
