Personal project:  Holiday cartoons

One of the things I find enjoyable is to take a given subject and wedge it into a specific art style.  A few years ago, I started doing this with our family Christmas cards, using my daughter, Haley, and our dog, Shinobi, as the subjects.  Initially, it was just the one drawing, which mimicked the ubiquitous Calvin and Hobbes pose that we're all familiar with.  Posting it on image-sharing site imgur.com showed me that many people enjoyed it - almost half a million hits in a very short span of time! - and of course the cards were a hit with our family and friends, and I started thinking of other styles I could do.

Here is that first card, in the Calvin and Hobbes style:

The next year, we had the Adventure Time cartoon on the brain!

For the next one, I decided to go purely classic.  [The teddy bear sitting on Nobi's belly is Mr. Fluffles, my daughter's faithful companion for life.]

2015's card was a very difficult one.  Shinobi passed away just before Thanksgiving; she had just turned 8, and we don't have any idea what happened.  So this one wasn't modeled on any specific cartoon; I just drew what I felt would be nice.  Haley looks a bit different because of her new punk-rock hairdo; she's just growing up so dang fast.

I'm not sure what we'll do this year or into the future, but I've enjoyed doing these each year and plan to continue the tradition in whatever way I can.  Thanks for reading/looking.
